5-1 Rotation (Offensive System)

The 5-1 is an offensive system using one designated setter and five attackers. In a 5-1 rotation, the setter is always the player who sets regardless of front-row or back-row position. When the setter is in the back row, all three front-row players are eligible attackers; when the setter is front row, two outside hitters and one middle are available. The 5-1 provides a consistent setter touch and is the most common system at the competitive level. It is a tactical designation, not defined in FIVB rules, but must operate within the rotation and overlap rules (FIVB Rule 7.5).
