Transition

Transition in volleyball refers to the shift from one phase of the game to another: specifically from defense (digging an attack) back to offense (setting and attacking), or from serve-receive into the offensive system. "Transition" is a tactical term, not defined in FIVB rules. Good transition play requires players to quickly move from their defensive positions to their offensive approach paths after a dig. Back-row attack rules (FIVB Rule 13.3.2) apply equally in transition as in serve-receive.
