Jump Serve (Topspin Serve)

A jump serve, also called a topspin serve, is an aggressive serve hit with a full arm swing after an approach and jump. The server tosses the ball forward and strikes it to generate topspin. The ball dips sharply and travels at high velocity. Per FIVB Rules 12.4.1 and 12.4.2, the ball is hit with one hand or any part of the arm after a single toss or release. Per FIVB Rule 12.4.3, at take-off for a jump service the server must not touch the court (end line included) or the floor outside the service zone, and after the hit the server may land inside the court. Jump serves are the primary offensive weapon at the collegiate and professional levels.
