Float Serve

A float serve is a serve struck without imparting spin, causing the ball to travel with an unpredictable, knuckleball-like trajectory due to air resistance acting asymmetrically on the seams. Float serves are not separately defined in FIVB rules but are governed by general service rules (FIVB Rule 12). The serve is legal provided the server contacts the ball cleanly within the service zone. Float serves are popular at all levels because the unpredictable movement is difficult to pass accurately.
