Float Serve

A float serve is struck without spin, so the ball travels on an unpredictable, knuckleball-like path. Air resistance acts asymmetrically on the seams, making the flight wobble. Float serves are not separately defined in FIVB rules but are governed by general service rules (FIVB Rule 12). The serve is legal provided the server contacts the ball cleanly within the service zone. Float serves are popular at all levels because the unpredictable movement is difficult to pass accurately.
