Service Zone

The service zone is the area behind the end line from which the server must hit the ball. Per FIVB Rule 1.4.2, it is a 9 m wide area behind the end line, limited at the sides by two short lines, each 15 cm long, drawn 20 cm behind the end line as extensions of the side lines. In depth it extends to the end of the free zone. At the moment of the service hit, or at take-off for a jump serve, the server must not touch the court (end line included) or the floor outside the service zone; doing so is a foot fault (FIVB Rule 12.4.3).
