Service Zone

The service zone is the area behind the end line from which the server must contact the ball during a serve. Per FIVB Rule 12.4, the service zone is 9 meters wide, bounded by two lines each 20 cm long, drawn behind the end line as extensions of the sidelines. The server may move freely within the service zone in depth (back into the free zone) but must not step on or over the end line at the moment of contact. Stepping on the end line at contact is a foot fault (FIVB Rule 12.8.2).
