Approach
The approach is the footwork sequence a hitter uses to generate momentum before jumping to attack. A standard four-step approach consists of right-left-right-left (or left-right- left-right for left-handers), with the last two steps close together and planted hard to convert forward momentum into vertical jump. A two-step or three-step approach may also be used. "Approach" is a tactical/biomechanical term, not defined in FIVB rules; the hitter must complete the attack hit within the applicable attack rules (FIVB Rule 13).
