What is a crossing line fault in volleyball?

Per FIVB Rule 11.4.3, it is a fault when a player's foot (feet) crosses completely into the opponent's court. Per FIVB Rule 11.2.2.1, a player may touch the opponent's court with a foot provided some part of the penetrating foot remains in contact with or directly above the centre line and the action does not interfere with the opponent's play. Per FIVB Rule 11.2.2.2, touching the opponent's court with any part of the body above the feet, including the hands, is permitted provided it does not interfere with the opponent's play. Players may also reach into the opponent's space under the net if they do not interfere (FIVB Rule 11.2.1). Crossing completely with the foot results in a point for the opponent. Domestic rules differ. NFHS allows a foot or hand across the center line only if part of it stays on or above the line, and contacting the opponent's court with any other body part is illegal. Under 2026-27 NCAA rules, completely crossing the center line with a foot is a fault, while other body parts may touch the opponent's court if some part of the body stays on or above the line and there is no interference. USAV allows any body part, including a whole foot or hand, to touch the opponent's court provided some part of the body stays on or above the center line, there is no interference and it is not a safety hazard.
