Shank

A shank is a badly misdirected pass or dig. Off-center contact with the forearms sends the ball out of the system or into the stands. "Shank" is not defined in FIVB rules. The contact is legal (provided the ball is not caught or thrown, FIVB Rule 9.2.2; on the team's first hit, consecutive contacts during one action are allowed, FIVB Rule 9.2.3.2) regardless of the direction, but a shanked serve-receive typically prevents the team from running an effective attack.
