Setter Dump (Setter Attack)

A setter dump occurs when the setter, instead of setting the ball to a hitter, attacks it directly over the net on the second contact. It is not defined separately in FIVB rules and is governed by general attack hit rules (FIVB Rule 13). A front-row setter may dump with any legal contact (including an open-hand tip or a hard swing). A back-row setter may not dump above net height from in front of the attack line (FIVB Rule 13.3.2). Setter dumps exploit blockers who are focused on the hitters.
