Read Blocking

Read blocking is a technique in which the blocker waits to see where the set is going before jumping. It is also called reading, or soft blocking. The blocker observes the setter's body position and arm angle before committing. This contrasts with commit blocking (keying on the hitter before the set). Read blocking reduces the risk of being on the wrong side of the hitter but requires quick reactions and good anticipation. It is a tactical term, not defined in FIVB rules.
