Overlap Fault (Positional Fault)

An overlap fault is committed when receiving-team players are out of their correct rotational position as the server hits the ball. The serving team's players may occupy any position (FIVB Rule 7.4). Per FIVB Rule 7.5.4, the fault results in a point and service for the opponent, and the positions are corrected. The positions are judged by the feet on the floor (FIVB Rule 7.4.3). Each back-row player must be level with, or further from the centre line than, the front foot of the corresponding front-row player. Each right-side player must be level with, or closer to the right sideline than, the centre player's foot that is further from that sideline. The same applies to each left-side player toward the left sideline.
