Lift

A lift (also called a carry or held ball) is an illegal contact where the ball visibly comes to rest, is caught, or is thrown rather than cleanly struck. Per FIVB Rule 9.2.2, the ball must be hit cleanly and not held, caught, or thrown. The referee judges lifts based on visible prolonged contact. Open-hand finger actions (sets) are carefully watched but are legal if the ball rebounds quickly.
