Joust
A joust occurs when two opposing players simultaneously contact the ball above the net. Per FIVB Rule 11.3.2, if the ball is held between two opponents simultaneously (a simultaneous contact), the ball is considered out of play momentarily and the rally is replayed. If both teams contact the ball simultaneously and the ball lands out of bounds, the team on the side toward which the ball was traveling is at fault. After a joust in which neither player holds the ball, the team whose player last touched it retains the right to three more contacts.
