Free Zone

The free zone is the area outside the playing court boundaries within which players may move and complete actions. Per FIVB Rule 1.1.3, the free zone must be at least 3 meters wide on all sides of the court, with a minimum of 5 meters behind the end lines at the international level. The ball remains in play when it is played within the free zone (e.g., a dig near the sideline), provided it crosses back over the net legally.
