Free Zone

The free zone is the area outside the playing court boundaries within which players may move and complete actions. Per FIVB Rule 1.1, the free zone is a minimum of 3 m wide on all sides of the court. For FIVB, World and Official Competitions, it measures 5 m from the side lines and 6.5 m from the end lines. The ball remains in play when it is played within the free zone (e.g., a dig near the sideline), provided it crosses back over the net legally.
