What a scorer actually does during a match. From pre-match lineup to the final captain's signature. Works for both paper and digital scoresheets. Especially useful if you are new to the scorer's table.

The scorer is the official record of the match. Every point, every substitution, every timeout, every libero replacement, every sanction. When a dispute happens, the scoresheet is the authoritative answer. When a tournament director wants to know what happened three matches ago, the scoresheet is the record.
Getting it right matters. Getting it right in real time while a fast sport is happening in front of you is the hard part. This guide walks through the standard workflow so new scorers can follow along, and veteran scorers can compare notes.
Pre-Match Setup.
Fill In Match Information
Date, venue, tournament, match number, team names, set format (best of 3, best of 5). This is the header of the scoresheet.
Collect Roster
Write each team's full roster with jersey numbers and libero designation. Highlight or circle the libero's number so you can spot libero entries during the set.
Record Starting Lineups
Write each team's starting six into the position boxes 1 through 6. Double-check the captain's name and the libero.
Record the Coin Toss
Which team won, whether they chose to serve or receive, and which side they start on.
What You Track Point by Point.
The Running Score
Each point goes into the running score in order. Track the cumulative score for both teams so you can verify at any moment that the score on the whistle matches the scoresheet.
The Serving Order
Mark the position 1 player as the first server. Every time the receiving team wins a rally (sideout), they rotate and the next player becomes the server. Track serving order in the left-hand column of the scoresheet.
Substitutions
When a player enters, record the incoming jersey number, outgoing jersey number, and the score at the moment of the sub. Make sure the team has not exceeded its per-set substitution limit. Most rulebooks allow up to 12 or 15 substitutions per set depending on level.
Libero Replacements
Libero entries happen on the service transition and are tracked in the libero column of the scoresheet. They do not count against the substitution total. You must still verify that a libero only enters for a back-row player and exits for the same player they replaced.
Timeouts
Record each timeout with the score at the time it was called. Each team has two per set. If a team tries a third, the R2 should warn them and you verify against your count.
Sanctions
Any yellow or red card goes into the sanctions column with the score and the player or coach who received it. Sanctions carry forward for the rest of the match for purposes of escalation.
Closing and Reopening.
Close the Set
Record the final score. Tally substitutions, timeouts, and sanctions used. Cross out empty rows so the scoresheet cannot be modified later.
Collect New Lineup Cards
Both teams submit new lineup cards for the next set. They may shift the rotation order freely; you start fresh with positions 1 through 6.
Verify Libero
Each team can change their libero designation between sets within the limits of the rules (some levels allow two liberos; others require you to stick with the one from set one).
Record Coin Toss or Automatic Serve
For sets after the first, the loser of the previous set's coin toss automatically serves first, or a new coin toss is held depending on the level. Record this.
Finishing the Scoresheet.
Record Final Set Scores
Write the final scores for every set in the match summary box. Total match time if the scoresheet has a field for it.
Sign and Witness
Both captains, the R1, the R2, and the scorer sign the scoresheet. At the high school and college level, this signature is what makes the result official.
Submit or Archive
Tournament scoresheets go to the tournament director. League matches are usually filed with the league office. Keep a photo or copy for yourself until the result is confirmed.
